چکیده
Context. ESPRESSO is the new high-resolution spectrograph of ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). It was designed for ultra-high radial-velocity (RV) precision and extreme spectral fidelity with aim performing exoplanet research fundamental astrophysical experiments unprecedented accuracy. able to observe any four Unit Telescopes (UTs) VLT at a resolving power 140 000 or 190 over 378.2 788.7 nm wavelength range; it can also all UTs together, turning into 16 m diameter equivalent telescope in terms collecting area while still providing 70 000. Aims. We provide general description instrument, report on its on-sky performance, present our Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) program along first results. Methods. installed Paranal Observatory fall 2017. Commissioning (on-sky testing) conducted between December 2017 September 2018. The instrument saw official start operations October 1, 2018, but improvements recommissioning runs were until July 2019. Results. measured overall optical throughput 550 seeing 0.65″ exceeds 10% mark under nominal astroclimatic conditions. demonstrate an RV better than 25 cm s −1 during single night 50 several months. These values being limited by photon noise stellar jitter shows that performance compatible instrumental 10 . No difference has been across UTs, neither nor precision. Conclusions. combination large efficiency exquisite opens parameter space measurements, study planetary atmospheres, constants, characterization, many other fields.

Mid-infrared imaging of NGC1068 with VISIR at the VLT
High resolution mid-infrared (MIR) images of the central region of NGC1068 have been obtained with VISIR, the multi-mode MIR instrument recently installed at the ESO/VLT on Paranal. A map of the emission at 12.8 μm with increased sensitivity over the central 8×8 arcsec area is discussed. It shows a central core (unresolved along the E-W direction) and an extended emission which draws a spiral p...
متن کاملFirst results of UVES at VLT : revisiting RR Tel ⋆
We present here the first results of UVES observations of RR Tel. The exceptional performances of the instrument have allowed the detection of new spectral features and have led to an improvement in the identifications of several emission lines. A direct comparison with the IUE observations in the range 3045-3300 Å has revealed the appearance of many weak and shallow lines, most of them lacking...
متن کاملA new VLT surface map of Titan at 1.575 microns
We present a first high contrast 1.575 micron surface map of Titan, that is haze corrected by simultaneously imaging the stratospheric layer. At visible and most near-infrared wavelengths, the methane rich atmosphere completely obscures the surface; only in a few narrow wavelength windows does the atmosphere become optically thin. One of the most convenient windows (Griffith et al. 2003) lies a...
متن کاملEspresso: Efficient Forward Propagation for BCNNs
There are many applications scenarios for which the computational performance and memory footprint of the prediction phase of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) needs to be optimized. Binary Neural Networks (BDNNs) have been shown to be an effective way of achieving this objective. In this paper, we show how Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be implemented using binary representations. Espresso...
متن کاملInteractive Component-Based Software Development with Espresso
There are a number of competing component models in use today. Most are language-independent, but also platform-dependent and not designed to support a tool-based development paradigm. Espresso is a new platform-independent component model whose primary goal is to make it easy for tools to manipulate and compose Espresso components interactively during the software development process. This pap...
